At ROOTS Academy, we bring the world of musical theatre to life! Whether you’re a seasoned dancer, a talented vocalist, or just someone with a passion for performing, our Musical Theatre Program is designed to unite the world of music and dance for our aspiring young performers.

Our goal is to have a positive and safe environment where students can learn exceptional techniques, see their full potential, and gain self-confidence.

Our program offers comprehensive training, from mastering show-stopping choreography to hitting high notes and building your acting skills for a complete performance experience.

Registration for the Fall 2025 Musical Theatre Program is open! Click below to register for our Fall production, Disney’s Newsies JR, or one of our musical theatre classes. Spots are limited!

Step into the thrilling world of the newsboys’ strike with Disney’s Newsies Jr – the high-energy musical that’s perfect for the whole family! Join Jack Kelly and his band of scrappy newsies as they rally together to fight for justice against powerful newspaper tycoons. This inspiring story of courage and friendship full of show stopping dance numbers and catchy songs will have you cheering in your seat! We hope your student will join us August – November for loads of fun, personal growth, and teamwork! Ending in a huge accomplishment – Newsies Jr performances for friends and family to enjoy!

To be a part of the Newsies Jr production, students must be 7-16 and must be registered for two classes:

  • Musical Theatre: Fall Production – Newsies JR – Meets 2x a week: Wed 6:30-7:30pm + Saturdays 1-4pm.
  • Musical Theatre: Triple Threat Class (the Wed 7:30-8:15pm has spots open! ) See Triple Threat Class below for details/cost.

AUDITIONS

GREAT NEWS! All who are registered for Newsies Jr will be cast in the show! One things wonderful about musical theatre is that there is a spot for everyone! Whether your student has been in many shows or this is their first one, they will have fun, be challenged, and grow with the cast over the process! If they want to be in it – we want them!

In Person Auditions:

We will go over what to expect in our in person auditions during our first class on Wednesday, August 13th.

In person auditions will be held on Saturday, August 16th from 1-6pm (note extended class time).

Video Auditions:

We ask that all students also submit a video audition. This gives your student two times to show us their best! Materials will be sent out soon for audition prep for the video portion. A simple iphone recording is great!

COST

  • $50 non-refundable supplies fee at registration
  • Newsies Tuition is divided out evenly over 4 months (Aug 1, Sept 1, Oct 1, Nov 1) = $150 a month.
  • No discounts, proration, or refunds for production class tuition or fee.
  • No refunds should you withdraw after auditions. Remaining tuition is due at withdrawal.

We hope your student can join us, diving in the world of 1899 Newsies… and together we will “Watch What Happens!” as they “Seize the Day!”

 

Triple Threat Class

Our Triple Threat class, designed for passionate and curious young performers 7-16, offers an immersive experience in the world of musical theatre—combining dance, singing, acting, and the foundational elements of stage performance. Whether a beginner or aspiring professional, students will gain the tools, confidence, and knowledge to thrive on stage and beyond. No previous theatre experience required.

Example of topics covered throughout the season:

  • Vocal warmups, pitch control, breath support, and harmonization
  • Rhythm and coordination through musical theatre dance choreography
  • Emphasis on storytelling through physical expression and stage presence
  • Singing Technique
  • Selections from Broadway classics
  • Scene study, monologue work and character development
  • Improv lessons to enhance confidence and creative thinking
  • Audition prep and etiquette
  • Careers in musical theatre
  • Famous musicals appreciation
  • Props and costuming 
  • Scene creation and character improv

This is a required class for our Fall/Spring Production, and they will be automatically enrolled in this class for their production months. Limited spots are available for our non-production students.

Performance Opportunities

  • Cabaret-style performances in December and May featuring some of our favorite pieces we have worked on during the season.

Meets Wednesday evenings 7:30-8:15pm from (August 13 – May 20)

 

COST:

Tuition: $100 a month*
Musical theatre registration fee:  $50 once a season
Showcase fee – $30 per showcase

*Musical theatre classes are not eligible for the dance multi-class discount, but sibling discount can be applied.

As an organization, we value excellence and clarity!

Tools that we use for clear communication and expectations:
  1. Weekly Rehearsal Notes and Homework: communication from the director on what was covered in the last rehearsal and what is expected for the next rehearsal.
  2. ProductionPro: This is immediate digital access to the most up-to-date versions of the script and piano vocal score, which they can see real-time blocking and script notes from the directors. Practice videos are uploaded + organized by scene and character, making the task of practicing at home as easy as possible

Absolutely! Dancers can add storytelling and acting to their repertoire, singers can enhance their stage presence and movement, and actors can learn to sing and dance confidently.

Throughout each year we aim to have 2-3 performance opportunities. One in the Fall and during the summer time. Registration for the Fall show will occur in June. Registration for our summer shows will open in January. Be sure to check our website for the most up to date information on registration and upcoming shows.

How can my student prepare for auditions?2025-01-08T15:11:40-06:00

Audition materials will be sent out prior to auditions, so all students have ample time and clear guidelines to prepare. Audition materials include audition music, dance video, and sides for auditions.
