Mentor Mission Statement

My mission is to guide aspiring drummers on a transformative journey of rhythm and self-awareness—helping them unlock their potential mentally, physically, and creatively through the power of drumming.

about Chris

Chris Ramirez’s relationship with music began with rhythm, friendship, and a lot of joyful noise. Some of his earliest memories are of drumming after school with his best friend — laughing, learning grooves, and turning anything within reach into an instrument. From pots and pans in the kitchen to a makeshift drum kit built from buckets and a shopping cart in his grandmother’s backyard, Chris was always finding ways to make music. That excitement — and the joy of creating sound — never left him.
Chris officially began his musical journey in his school’s fifth-grade band program. Though initially placed on trumpet, he knew drums were where he belonged and convinced his instructor to let him try the drumline. By middle school, he was playing full drum kit in jazz band and discovering how rhythm supports and connects an entire ensemble. To Chris, drums became the foundation that helps bring music to life.
Mentorship played a major role in shaping his path, especially through his instructor Joey Hernandez, who helped Chris recognize both his musical potential and the personal growth that comes through discipline and perseverance. Although Chris originally planned a career in journalism, working in a drum shop after college reignited his passion and brought him back to music.
As a mentor, Chris takes a thoughtful, holistic approach to teaching. His lessons focus not only on technique but also on understanding the “why” behind rhythm, helping students build confidence and curiosity as musicians.
Outside of ROOTS Academy, Chris performs with multiple bands and continues developing his creative projects.

I embrace the mantra “break it down, build it up.” Drumming can often seem overwhelming, especially for beginners. To make the learning process more manageable, I focus on breaking complex rhythms and techniques into smaller, digestible components.

By dissecting a challenging groove or pattern, we can isolate the individual elements—like hand coordination, footwork, or dynamics—making it easier to understand and master each part. This method not only alleviates frustration but also instills confidence, as students see tangible progress with each small victory.

Once the foundational components are solid, we then build them back up, layering them together to create the complete rhythm. This step-by-step approach not only reinforces skills but also helps students appreciate the artistry of drumming as they see how each piece contributes to the whole.

Ultimately, “break it down, build it up” transforms the learning journey into an empowering experience, allowing students to embrace challenges and cultivate a deep, lasting connection to their instrument.

What’s been the highlight of your professional career — like your biggest spotlight moment to date?
“A highlight of my professional music career was performing at the iconic Whisky a Go Go. Signing my name alongside legendary drummers felt surreal, and throughout the night, I experienced a thrilling connection to the venue’s rich history and vibrant energy. To top it all off, my mom and dad were in the audience, making the experience even more unforgettable!”

What type of student will excel under your mentorship?
“The students who thrive in my drum lessons are those who embrace a fun and playful approach to learning. They enjoy being silly and creative while still setting ambitious goals for their drumming journey. If you love exploring new rhythms, experimenting with different styles, and infusing a sense of joy into practice, you’ll find our sessions engaging and inspiring. Together, we’ll strike a balance between hard work and play, ensuring you develop your skills while having a blast!”

What does being a “Mentor” mean to you and why are you excited to step into this role?
“Being a music mentor means more than just teaching an instrument; it’s about fostering a supportive environment where students can thrive. It involves actively listening and showing genuine care for their personal growth. I believe music has the power to transform lives, and as a mentor, I’m excited to help students discover their unique voices and build their confidence.

Stepping into a music mentor role allows me to give back to the community. I want to inspire my students not only to become skilled musicians but also to embrace their individuality and express their emotions through music. Watching them grow and succeed is incredibly rewarding, and I feel honored to play a part in their journey.

In this role, I aim to create a safe space where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth and where creativity can flourish. Ultimately, being a mentor is about building relationships and making a positive impact on someone’s life, and I can’t wait to embark on this journey.”

What type of music did you grow up listening to? How did it influence your artistry?
“At 8 years old, I was enthralled by the electrifying sounds of AC/DC and Led Zeppelin on the classic rock station. As I grew up, my musical palette included classic rock, alternative, metal, hip-hop, reggae, pop, gospel, and vibrant Spanish tunes from my grandparents. The powerful resonance of rock music captivated me, while drummers like John Bonham, Buddy Rich, and Neil Peart profoundly shaped my style. Each genre imparted valuable lessons in rhythm and dynamics, with reggae introducing offbeat accents and hip-hop emphasizing groove. These formative experiences significantly shaped my identity as a musician and continue to inspire my distinctive sound today.”

Where is your favorite local spot?
“One of my favorite spots to go is Percy Priest Lake. It is a great place to get out and soak in nature!”

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
“An astronaut!”

If you could meet one author/performer/creator who would it be and what wold you ask them?
“I would love to have met JRR Tolkien! I would like ask him which Lord of the Rings character he would be in real life!”
