Mentor Mission Statement

My mission is to nurture curiosity and excitement in every student, helping them build musical skills they can use for life while gaining the confidence to pursue anything they set their mind to.

about Gavin

Gavin Geddes fell in love with music through the feeling of togetherness: sitting in orchestra and hearing a full piece finally come together after weeks of work. The sound of many musicians creating something beautiful as one was euphoric, and it hooked him instantly! From that moment on, Gavin knew music would always be part of his life.

He began on viola in public school, choosing it simply because he didn’t know what it was—an unexpected decision that became a meaningful starting point. With the guidance of a thoughtful teacher, Gavin learned not only technique, but how encouragement and patience can shape a musician’s confidence. As he grew, songwriting became another outlet, and performing an original song at his first open mic marked a turning point. Sharing his music with strangers was vulnerable, but it inspired him to keep creating.

Gavin draws inspiration from artists like Beck and David Bowie — creators who embrace curiosity, individuality, and joy. Over time, he faced moments of burnout and comparison, especially when music felt more technical than expressive. Each time, he returned to the same truth: music should bring joy, and that joy is worth protecting.

After stepping away from teaching for a period, Gavin realized how meaningful it was to help others grow. Returning to music education felt natural. He enjoys helping students experience “aha!” moments when ideas click and connections form.

Outside of ROOTS Academy, Gavin composes for film, produces music for artists, and performs with his band, Drive!Drive!

Like the head chef in Ratatouille once said, “anyone can cook”. I believe the same with music. Anyone can be involved in music. I believe that if you’re determined enough, you can find something in music that resonates with you, and when you do, that feeling is one of the best feelings in the world.

What’s been the highlight of your professional career?

I composed for a short film that involved Patrick Fabian, who I had the pleasure of meeting on the red carpet at the short film premiere 2 years ago. I had been a fan of Patrick for a very long time, and it was surreal meeting him in person, not only as a fan, but as a collaborator. I sat next to him as we watched the project we worked on together. He was a very sweet person, and very encouraging and down to earth. Watching that short film in the theater together, and listening to the audiences reactions to the film was exhilarating and a feeling I have been chasing ever since.

What type of student will excel best with you as his/her mentor?:

A student who loves to deep dive, and really understand the principles will thrive with me. I love getting deep and philosophical about music and art. We can zoom out to learning about what music is- what sound is, and how it works, and why certain frequencies affect us in certain ways. I was the kid that was always asking “but why?”, which I’m sure drove my parents crazy. But if you are the kind of person who likes to know why, you will love working with me.

What does being a “Mentor” mean to you and why are you excited to step into this role?:

I attribute many of my best qualities to a mentor who cared about me, and wanted to help me with my perspective on the world. I think it’s really special, and a big responsibility to be a mentor, to be someone a student or mentee looks up to. I take that responsibility very seriously, and I’m excited to help a generation love and appreciate music as much as I do.

What type of music did you grow up listening to? How did it influence your artistry?:

I grew up listening to Juan Gabriel as I cleaned the house with my mom, and I mostly listened to classical music for a long time- Rachmaninov, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Vaughan Williams, Mendelssohn, Holst, Satie, and many others being my favorite composers. A friend then introduced me to Viva La Vida by Coldplay. I remember the string arrangement tickling my brain, and it made me want more from non-classical music. I think having a mainly orchestral background has really influenced the way I look at music. I think of it in terms of composition, versus songwriting. It has led to a lot of my music being very orchestral, and cinematic.
