Mentor Mission Statement

"As a mentor at ROOTS Academy, my mission is to grow students' confidence and knowledge of music by striving for realistic goals and being flexible to their learning styles. I strive to create an environment where students can feel comfortable if they are struggling, and I am committed to having patience and understanding towards any student. Through my teaching, I hope music will inspire my students just as it inspired me, and help them grow in their learning all the while."

Micayla Smith is a dynamic and dedicated music mentor whose structured, yet expressive approach to teaching transforms her students’ musical journeys. Her unique blend of goal-oriented lessons and creative expression makes her a cherished guide for growing musicians at ROOTS!

Micayla’s love for music was sparked in first grade during a school talent show, where a middle schooler’s beautiful voice inspired her to pursue music. This early encounter set her on a path that led her through middle school choir and ensemble, culminating in a pivotal moment when she became the only freshman to join her high school’s advanced choir. Encouraged by her choir teacher, Mrs. Martin, Micayla decided to pursue music seriously, finding her greatest joy in giving glory through song at church.

Learning from various teachers utilizing different teaching styles in college taught her the importance of tailoring her instruction to fit each student’s needs. Micayla’s experiences have shaped her teaching philosophy, ensuring she remains patient and supportive, adapting to each student’s pace with positivity and encouragement.

Micayla’s lessons are infused with energy and fun, focusing on performance and emotional storytelling, while also emphasizing music theory and sight-reading. She believes in setting clear, achievable goals, fostering an environment where students feel motivated and confident.

Outside the classroom, Micayla is a gym enthusiast and a movie and book connoisseur. Her passion for songwriting and creating demos keeps her connected to her craft, while her aspirations include running her own studio in the future. Through her teaching, Micayla aims to inspire her students just as music has inspired her.
